When the shop won't take the old one

If you are buying a new appliance, Irish WEEE rules say the shop must take back your old one free of charge, like for like. Ask how they handle it when you order.

Appliances we collect

• Fridges, fridge-freezers and chest freezers, including American-style
• Washing machines, washer-dryers and tumble dryers

Most things with a plug or a battery are WEEE: waste electrical and electronic equipment. It can't go in your bins, and it has to go to an authorised collector or facility. Everything we collect does.

Appliance prices, and why fridges cost more

In Dublin there is a €100 call-out and labour charge for the van and both loaders, then a set price per appliance: a washing machine is €30, a cooker €30, a tumble dryer €20, a dishwasher €20 and a TV €20. Every price includes VAT, and the full list is on our price list.

A fridge, freezer or fridge-freezer is €45. They hold refrigerant gases in the cooling circuit, and older models in the insulation foam too. Those gases have to be removed safely before the metal and plastic can be recycled, which costs more than treating a washing machine.

The call-out is charged once per collection, so the fridge, the washer and the old microwave cost less together than on separate visits.

Before we arrive

• You disconnect it, we carry it out. Unplug it and turn off and disconnect the water. A gas cooker must be disconnected by a registered gas installer.
• Empty and defrost. Clear the fridge or freezer and switch it off the day before, so it isn't dripping on the way out.
• Clear the route. Move anything fragile out of the hall. We handle the rest.
• Agree access. Someone needs to let us in, or the appliance can be left ready in a garage or porch we can reach, if that's agreed in advance.
