Mattress disposal: council, retailer or collection?

Choose by whether you can move the mattress yourself, whether you are buying a replacement, and where you live. A drop-off fee and a collection price cover different work.

• Bring it yourself: Dublin City Council lists mattresses as a charged material at Ringsend Recycling Centre, with a maximum of two per load. Check current vehicle rules, charges and opening hours before loading the car.
• Council collection: households in the Dublin City Council area can use its bulky household waste service. Its terms include mattresses, but the crew does not carry from inside the home or garden. Check your own council if you live elsewhere in County Dublin.
• Buying a replacement: ask the retailer about take-back before ordering. IKEA Ireland offers a separate mattress-removal service with preparation and purchase conditions. It requires a dry, bagged mattress near the front door; confirm eligibility when booking with the retailer.
• Need it carried out: our complete Dublin collection price is €130. Two loaders carry one mattress from the room, load it and take it to an authorised facility. You do not need to buy a replacement. Add a frame or other furniture to the same list if it is going too.

Why an old mattress is hard to shift

A mattress is floppy, heavier than it looks, and won't fit in the bin or in most cars. It's also made of steel springs, foam and fabric bound together, so it can't be handled like ordinary rubbish.

Separating those materials costs more than dealing with a bag of household waste. That is why a mattress has its own line on our price list, and why the price is the same whatever the size.

What we collect from the bedroom

• Mattresses of any size: cot, single, small double, double, king and super king
• Bunk bed mattresses and mattress toppers
• Bed frames: wooden, metal and upholstered
• Divan bases and headboards
• Sofa beds, mattress and all

Frames are priced separately from the mattress: €20 for a single frame and €30 for a double or bigger. A sofa bed is €35.

Clear the whole room in one visit

The €100 call-out covers the van and both loaders, and it's only charged once. So if the mattress is going, it's a good time to add the old frame, a single wardrobe (€30), a chest of drawers (€15) or a few bags of rubbish (€5 each).

Only hand it to a permitted collector

Dumped mattresses turn up in laneways and on waste ground. Householders have a legal duty to hand their waste only to an authorised collector, so check that anyone offering to take your mattress holds a waste collection permit. Be wary of a price that seems too good to be true.
