Your five options at a glance
There are five realistic ways to get rid of a sofa in Dublin. Which one suits depends on the sofa's condition, whether you can move it, and how soon it has to be gone.
- Sell or give it away. Free, if someone wants it and actually turns up.
- Donate it. Charity shops and reuse projects take some sofas, usually only clean ones with a fire-safety label.
- Hand it to the retailer. Some furniture shops take the old sofa when they deliver the new one, often for a fee.
- Bring it to a recycling centre. Council recycling centres accept bulky furniture, usually for a charge, if you can get it there.
- Have it collected. A licensed collector carries it out and takes it away. That's what we do.
Selling or giving it away
A sofa in good condition can go quickly on a local selling or free-to-collect site. Photograph it in daylight and give the width, depth and height, so people can check it will get through their own front door.
Say clearly that the buyer collects and carries. Set a deadline too: free listings bring no-shows, and a sofa waiting in the hall for a fortnight is a problem when the new one is on its way.
Charities, retailers and the council
Charity shops and furniture reuse projects can only pass on upholstered furniture that meets fire-safety rules, so most ask to see the label sewn under the cushions or on the base. Without it they usually can't accept the sofa, however good it looks. Contact them first and send a photo of the label.
If you are buying new, ask the shop whether it takes the old sofa on delivery, what that costs, and whether its crew will carry it down from upstairs. Some only take it from the ground floor or the front door.
For self-delivery, check your council's accepted materials, charges and live opening notices before loading. What collection costs
Our price is a €100 call-out and labour charge for Dublin, which pays for the van and two loaders, plus a set price for each piece from our price list. VAT is included.
- 2-seater sofa: €30

- Armchair or recliner: €20

Which type of sofa do you have?
- Corner and L-shaped sofas usually unclip into two or three sections. They cost more because they take far more room in the van.
- Sofa beds hide a steel fold-out frame. They look like a 3-seater but are heavier to carry.
- Power recliners have a motor and cables. Unplug them, close the footrests and tuck the cables in.
- Modular sofas are separate seats and corner pieces. A photo shows how many there are, so each one is priced.

Getting it out of an upstairs flat
Two loaders carry the sofa from wherever it is: a top-floor flat in Rathmines, a Georgian basement or a sixth-floor apartment in the Docklands. You don't need to get it to the door.
If it came in, it can almost always go out the same way. Taking off the legs often gives the extra few centimetres at a tight turn. Someone needs to be home on the day, or access agreed in advance, such as a neighbour with a key or the concierge letting us in.
Before collection day
- Check down the back of the cushions for keys, coins and the TV remote.
- Take off throws and cushions you're keeping.
- Unscrew the legs if they come off easily. They go in the van with the sofa.
- Clear a path to the front door and move anything fragile from the hall.
- Let the concierge or management company know if your block needs notice.
Collections run on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 14:00–16:00. If the new sofa is coming on a set date, book the collection before it so you are never storing two.
If you're still trying to sell it
Give the sale a deadline, and book once you know the sofa is going. Your price is for the collection you book, and it doesn't go down if a buyer takes the sofa on the day.
