Clearing out on the southside: what usually goes

Much of the Victorian red-brick around Rathmines, Rathgar and Ranelagh has been split into flats, including basement flats with steep steps down from the street. When tenants move on, they leave a bed, a mattress at €30 and maybe a two-seater sofa at €30. The loaders carry it all up the steps to the van.

The older semis of Terenure, Kimmage and Churchtown, and the bigger family homes of Templeogue and Rathfarnham, tend to have long back gardens with a shed at the end. A small wooden shed is €110, a large one €175, and garden waste is €5 a bag.

Up towards the mountains, in Ballinteer and Ballyboden, it's more often the garage that has quietly become storage: boxes, an adult bike or two at €10 each, and an old appliance that never made it to the recycling centre.

Three councils, one price

South Dublin straddles three councils, and each runs its own recycling centre for householders: Dublin City Council at Ringsend, Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown at Ballyogan and South Dublin County Council at Ballymount. Each has its own charges and rules, so check your council's page before you load the car. (Checked October 2026.)
