Clearing out from Clontarf to Howth: what usually goes

Homes along this stretch of coast tend to be lived in for a long time, and the attic is where it all ends up: suitcases, boxes of books, old toys, a cot, the spare dining chairs. A box of odds and ends is €10, a bag of books €10.50 and a dining chair €5.

Older houses in Clontarf often have a steep attic stair or a pull-down ladder, a narrow hall and a tight turn on the landing. In Howth and Sutton, some homes sit up a flight of steps from the road, with nowhere for a van to wait right outside.

Two councils, one coast road

Clontarf, Raheny, Killester and Kilbarrack are in Dublin City Council's area. The council runs a bulky household waste collection, with items left out on the public footpath on a date it sets, and recycling centres including North Strand.

Howth, Sutton and Baldoyle are in Fingal, which doesn't run a bulky collection and points householders to authorised collectors and its recycling centres in Swords and Dublin 15.
