Carpet removal in Dún Laoghaire, in short
Carpet is priced by area at €2 per m², with underlay at the same rate, plus a €100 call-out and labour charge for the van and two loaders. VAT is included. If you need help measuring a room, our carpet measuring guide works through a whole three-bed semi.
Dún Laoghaire's older housing throws up a few jobs that guide doesn't cover. Here they are.
Stair runners and brass rods
Many period houses in Dún Laoghaire, Monkstown and Glenageary have a stair runner rather than fitted carpet: a strip down the middle of the stairs, held by rods or clips, with painted or varnished timber showing at each side.
- Measuring a runner: multiply its width by its full length. Runners are narrower than fitted stair carpet, so don't use the width of the stairs.
- Rods and clips: loose stair rods can go in with the runner. Brass rods in good order are worth keeping, as they can often be sold or reused.
- Tacks: older runners are often tacked at every step. Pull or hammer the tacks flat before anyone walks the stairs in socks.
- Underfelt: old felt pads under a runner crumble when lifted. Bag them as you go.
Three and four floors of carpet
Victorian houses around Dún Laoghaire and Monkstown often run to three or four storeys, with a return halfway up each flight. Whole-house carpet removal there is mostly carrying: heavy rolls coming down several flights and out over granite front steps. Our two loaders do all of it.
Have it lifted before the day, by you or your fitter. Stack the rolls in the hall if you can; if not, we collect them from wherever they are.
Garden-level flats and wet carpet
Garden-level flats in period houses sit partly below the street, and a blocked gully or a burst pipe can soak a carpet quickly. Wet carpet and underlay weigh far more than dry, and they smell within days.
- If the water came from another flat or a burst pipe, photograph everything for your insurer before anything is lifted.
- Lift it as soon as you can so the floor underneath can dry.
- Roll it wet side in and stand the rolls somewhere they can drain, ideally outside.
- Tell us it is wet when you send photos, so the loaders come ready for it.
What's under the old carpet
In period houses, lifting carpet often reveals original pine floorboards worth keeping. In homes built from the 1950s to the 1980s, such as the estates around Ballybrack and Sallynoggin, it can reveal old vinyl or thermoplastic floor tiles, often in small squares. Those tiles, and the black adhesive under them, can contain asbestos.
A photo cannot confirm whether floor tiles or adhesive contain asbestos. The Health and Safety Authority advises a survey by a competent person before work that could disturb it.
Do not scrape, break or sand suspect tiles or adhesive. Leave them in place for specialist assessment. We do not take floor tiles or anything that may contain asbestos.
Between tenants
Landlords often change carpets between lettings, and the gap between tenants is short. Book the collection for the day after the old tenant leaves and before the fitter arrives. A few things make it easier:
- You don't need to be there. Access can be agreed in advance, such as a letting agent or neighbour letting us in.
- Clear the rest at the same time. A stained mattress is €30, a single bed frame €20, and one call-out covers the lot.
- Keep the paperwork. You get a receipt with VAT shown, which you can use for your rental accounts.
- Check what the old tenant leaves before you book. Your price is for the collection you book, so it stays the same if a listed item has gone. If the list changes after you book, cancel free more than 24 hours before and rebook.
Seafront apartments
In the apartment blocks along the seafront and around the harbour, measure the depth of the lift and cut the rolls short enough to stand upright in it. If the building wants the lift booked for removals, pick your collection slot first, then book the lift for that time. With no lift, the loaders carry the rolls down the stairwell.
Collection slots run Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, 14:00–16:00. Send photos of the rolls, or of each room with its size, and get your price. For everything else we take locally, see junk removal in Dún Laoghaire.
